Niacinamide: The Ingredient Everyone Is Using but Few People Fully Understand

It is hard to find a toner, serum, or moisturizer right now that does not list niacinamide somewhere near the top of its ingredients. The ingredient has become a staple in Korean skincare, a darling of dermatology-influenced routines, and a fixture on the shelves of every budget and luxury brand alike.

But what is it actually doing? And is all the enthusiasm warranted?


What Niacinamide Is

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3, also called nicotinamide. It is water-soluble, stable across a range of formulations, and well-tolerated by most skin types, including sensitive skin. Unlike many active ingredients that work by exfoliating or aggressively stimulating cell turnover, niacinamide works more quietly, through several overlapping biological mechanisms.

That stability and tolerability is part of why it has become so popular. It does not cause the initial purging or irritation associated with retinoids. It does not sensitize skin to the sun like AHAs do. It layers well with other actives. For formulators and consumers alike, it is remarkably cooperative.


What It Actually Does in Skin

Supports Ceramide Production

One of niacinamide's most well-documented effects is its role in stimulating ceramide synthesis in the skin. Ceramides are the lipid molecules that make up a large portion of the skin barrier's structural matrix. When ceramide levels decline, the barrier becomes more permeable, which means more water loss and more vulnerability to irritants.

By supporting ceramide production, niacinamide helps maintain barrier integrity from within, rather than just coating the surface.

Reduces Hyperpigmentation

Niacinamide inhibits the transfer of melanin-containing structures (called melanosomes) from melanocytes to keratinocytes. In practice, this means that with consistent use, it can gradually reduce the appearance of dark spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone.

This mechanism is distinct from how ingredients like vitamin C work, which is why the two are sometimes combined in brightening formulations.

Visibly Minimizes Enlarged Pores and Oiliness

Several clinical studies have shown that niacinamide, applied topically at concentrations of 2 to 5 percent, can reduce sebum excretion and improve the appearance of enlarged pores. For people with oily or combination skin, this makes it one of the few ingredients that addresses both shine and the chronic feeling of congestion.

Calms Inflammation

Niacinamide has measurable anti-inflammatory properties. It reduces the production of certain cytokines involved in inflammatory responses, which is why it shows up frequently in products for acne-prone skin and rosacea.

Supports NAD+ Synthesis

This is the part that gets interesting from a cellular biology standpoint.

Niacinamide is a precursor to NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), a coenzyme that plays a central role in cellular energy metabolism and DNA repair. As skin ages, NAD+ levels decline. Topical niacinamide may help replenish local levels, supporting the skin's capacity to repair oxidative damage.

This is also why niacinamide has started appearing in serious anti-aging formulations alongside peptides and retinoids, not just in oil-control products aimed at younger skin.


Does the Concentration Matter?

Yes. This is where a lot of consumer confusion lives.

Most clinical studies showing meaningful results have used concentrations between 2 and 5 %. At 5 %, niacinamide has demonstrated visible improvements in hyperpigmentation and barrier function in well-designed human trials.

Some brands market products at 10 to 20 %, often framing higher numbers as more powerful. But the evidence base for those concentrations is thinner, and higher concentrations increase the likelihood of side effects, including skin flushing and irritation. More is not always better, and in this case the relationship between concentration and benefit levels off well before double-digit percentages.


What About Mixing Niacinamide with Vitamin C?

For years, a persistent skincare myth warned that you should never use niacinamide and vitamin C together because they would react and form niacin, which causes flushing and irritation.

The chemistry behind this concern is real, but the conditions under which it occurs do not reflect normal skincare use. The reaction requires elevated temperatures and prolonged exposure, not typical skin application. Modern research and practical formulation experience both support that these two ingredients can be used together without meaningful adverse effects at normal cosmetic concentrations.

The myth persists partly because it sounds plausible and partly because some older formulations had quality issues unrelated to this specific interaction. But if you have been keeping your vitamin C and niacinamide separate out of caution, you can stop.


The One Caveat Worth Knowing

Niacinamide is not a replacement for targeted actives. It does a lot of things reasonably well, which is exactly why it has become so ubiquitous. But if you have a specific concern, such as significant hyperpigmentation, accelerated aging, or persistent acne, niacinamide is a supportive ingredient, not the lead actor.

Think of it the way you would think about a well-formulated base soap or facial cleanser: the right foundation matters enormously, and getting it right makes everything else work better. But the foundation is not the whole story.
